Gréta Kristín Ómarsdóttir is an Icelandic theatre maker, director & dramaturg. She graduated with a B.A degree in Theatre & Performance making from Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2016. Before studying theatre she studied Literature and Gender studies at The University of Iceland.

She currently works as a lecturer on postdramatic theatre and feminist criticism at Iceland Academy of the Arts and as a dramaturg and director for The National Theatre in Iceland (Þjóðleikhúsið).

She has also worked as a freelance director and dramaturg for The City Theatre of Reykjavík (Borgarleikhúsið) since 2015 as well as translating for the stage; for Þjóðleikhúsið, The Rimbaud & Verlaine Foundation in London and Gljúfrasteinn, along with freelancing as a producer & coordinatior for various festivals, groups and performances all over Scandinavia since 2010, Among which are Akureyrarbær, Lókal - International Theatre festival, the festival Everybody’s Spectacular and the TNT Network for Theatre and New Technology.

Gréta's main focus is directing. In 2019 she directed Marius von Mayenburgs’ Peng! at Borgarleikhúsið and Insomnia at Þjóðleikhúsið – which was a devised performance of the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S as contemporary mythology, in collaboration with her own theatre group Stertabenda and the danish playwright Amalie Olesen. In 2018 she directed a children’s play for Borgarleikhúsið and in 2017 she directed Crash course, a reading of 4 new Nordic short-plays for Dramafronten and Tjarnarbíó theatre in Reykjavik. Gréta has also directed radio plays for the Icelandic Broadcasting Service (RÚV). In 2017 her production of Eftir Ljós by Salka Guðmundsdóttir was nominated as Radio play of the year by the Icelandic Theatre awards.

In 2017 Gréta was nominated as director of the year by the Icelandic Theatre awards (Gríman) for her director’s debut, Stertabenda, an adaptation of Marius von Mayenburgs Perplexed. After the production, Gréta founded her own theatre company by the name of Stertabenda.

Gréta was awarded Newcomer of the year 2017 for various works in Icelandic theatre in her short career.
